Luke 7:28 “For I say unto you, Among those that are born of
women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is
least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
John the Baptist was the cousin of Jesus. He was a prophet
laying the way for Christ. He spoke of one greater than himself that would soon
come. The artist portrays John the Baptist as a true prophet, yet having a
demeanor of humility and obedience to God. He was martyred himself, decapitated
and his head was served on a plate. John the Baptist is linked to water. Water
was an essential part of John the Baptist’s ministry, so it is natural for an
artist like Gib Singleton to use the figure of John the Baptist to create a
fountain. The artist uses the sound of water as a part of the sculpture to help
the viewer connect with the narrative.
